| DESCRIPTION | The tourism industry is no longer driven by volume growth, but faces a complex web of economic, environmental and technological pressures. Stakeholders must balance affordability, sustainability, and experience quality. This study-unit examines the main issues affecting the tourism industry during the 21st Century. Factors like economic growth vs economic development, climate change and various other sustainability issues, geopolitics, market shifts and digital reputation will be examined. Study-unit Aims: The objective of this unit is to familiarise students with the topical issues and their implications for the tourism industry. It also aims to familiarize students with how current trends and developments including politics and environmental and economic issues impact the industry. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Comprehend the dynamics of the tourism industry and the need for a flexible approach; • Encourage analytical skills to develop effective decision making; • Discuss, using appropriate examples, the prevalent issues facing the tourism industry. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Identify and assess the trends and issues facing the tourism industry Critically evaluate situations and suggest possible courses of action based on established knowledge; • Combine textbook theory with case studies and recent articles to demonstrate critical thinking.
